Sandra Halužan Quartet (HR)
Emotional musical journey to the roots of (one’s) being. Sandra Halužan is a Croatian jazz musician renowned for her innovative approach to jazz, blending traditional elements with avant-garde influences. She is proficient in vocals, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and the Indian double flute. Since 2020, she has led the Sandra Halužan Quartet, collaborating with prominent Croatian musicians such as Joe Kaplowitz (piano), Nikola Šantek (piano), Bojan Skočilić (double bass), Antun Profeta (drums), Borko Rupena (drums). Several separate combinations and compositions within the quartet were also created, all with the aim of deeper sound research. In March 2022, the quartet released their debut album, "Vu plavem," which features original compositions and reimagined traditional songs from the Zagorje region. The album received positive acclaim for its unique sound and artistic vision. Lending her rich mezzo voice to her ancestors, Sandra retells stories of their hardships endured as farm workers and war survivors while weaving her authentic tapestry of sounds. Singing in her native dialect, Sandra traverses time by touching on universal topics such as leaving home, love, and returning to one’s roots, closing the album with her original song on the search for the essence of being. The quartet’s skillful interplay and freedom of expression guarantee a unique combination of jazz, blues, and folk elements, resulting in a captivating performance brimming with emotion. When playing live, they go for a more electronic, groovy sound, often bringing the audience to their feet. The quartet is currently working on new material.
